Kingfisher: Mintabie boasts a large amount of flora and fauna. The pictured Kingfisher belongs to the same family as the famous Australian Kookaburra. |
Galahs: The Galah is perhaps the most famous of Australian birds. Mintabie is home to many of them, particularly when the lake is full and water is plentiful.. |
Thorny Devil: The thorny devil is actually a very timid reptile. Growing to a size of approximately 20cm, this lizard lives on insects and is extremely difficult to see when it blends in with the red dune sand and undergrowth. |
Netted Dragon: The netted dragon is one of the most common lizards to be found in the Mintabie area. It is a close relative of another Australian icon, the frillneck lizard. Like the frillneck, the netted dragon runs on its hind legs and is an inquisitive lizard growing to a maximum size of about 25 cm. |
Goanna: The goanna is one of the larger varieties of lizard to be found in the area. Growing to a size of approx 2m, the goanna enjoys a diet of (among other things) eggs. They are extremely agile and fast. Locals believe that a goanna in the vicinity of a campsite will deter snakes. |
