Applying for a P.S.P.P. must be
done in person at any P.I.R.S.A. field office, or at the head office
in Adelaide. Upon applying and paying for the permit, the applicant
will be issued with a set of four plastic tags. These tags show the
P.S.P.P. number and the expiry date. If applying for a P.S.P.P. at a
field office, you may have to wait several days before the plastic
tags are produced at head office and returned to the field office.
The P.S.P.P. tags are attached to
the 4 claim pegs for identification purposes, and must be in order
before pegging a claim. The P.I.R.S.A. field offices have literature
which shows the correct way to set up claim pegs.
Now you are ready to go out into
the opal field and peg your claim - and hopefully strike it rich!!!
One important point to remember
about a P.S.P.P. is that it expires after 12 months. If you have a
registered tenement you intend keeping, there is no need to renew
the P.S.P.P.,
however, if you intend to peg a new claim, it
is important to know whether or not your P.S.P.P. is current. The date on the
P.S.P.P. is the expiry date. Over the years, many miners in opal towns have
heard about a rush to a new field, only to find their P.S.P.P. expired. That
four or five day wait for a new set of tags was the difference between them
getting a claim in a new area, and missing out.
